چکیده

Abstract. The number of possible activity patterns in a population of neurons grows exponentially with the size of the population. Typical experiments explore only a tiny fraction of the large space of possible activity patterns in the case of populations with more than 10 or 20 neurons. It is thus impossible, in this undersampled regime, to estimate the probabilities with which most of the activity patterns occur. As a result, the corresponding entropy—which is a measure of the computational power of the neural population—cannot be estimated directly. We propose a simple scheme for estimating the entropy in the undersampled regime, which bounds its value from both below and above. The lower bound is the usual ‘naive’ entropy of the experimental frequencies. The upper bound results from a hybrid approximation of the entropy which makes use of the naive estimate, a maximum entropy fit, and a coverage adjustment. We apply our simple scheme to artificial data, in order to check their accuracy; we also compare its performance to those of several previously defined entropy estimators. We then apply it to actual measurements of neural activity in populations with

Using neural network to estimate weibull parameters

As is well known, estimating parameters of the tree-parameter weibull distribution is a complicated task and sometimes contentious area with several methods vying for recognition. Weibull distribution involves in reliability studies frequently and has many applications in engineering. However estimating the parameters of Weibull distribution is crucial in classical ways. This distribution has t...

Simple Equations for Predicting Entropy of Ammonia-Water Mixture

This work presents a set of three simple and explicit equations as a function of temperature, pressure, and mass fraction for calculation of the entropy of the ammonia-water mixture in saturated and super heated conditions. They are intended for use in the optimization and second law efficiency of absorption processes. The equations are constructed by the least square method for curve fitting u...

Prediction of scour dimension in the Plunge Pools below Outlet Bucket with Artificial intelligence method

Accurate prediction of sediment scour hole dimensions downstream of hydraulic structures, e.g. the outlet bucket, is a complex and not straight forward engineering problem encountered worldwide. Because of the complexities of the study, its comprehensive, simultaneous including water flow,  sediment and applying all of the effective variables involved in scouring it is not easy possible. Dimens...

Natural Convection and Entropy Generation in Γ-Shaped Enclosure Using Lattice Boltzmann Method

This work presents a numerical analysis of entropy generation in Γ-Shaped enclosure that was submitted to the natural convection process using a simple thermal lattice Boltzmann method (TLBM) with the Boussinesq approximation.  A 2D thermal lattice Boltzmann method with 9 velocities, D2Q9, is used to solve the thermal flow problem. The simulations are performed at a constant Prandtl number (Pr ...
